LONDON STADIUM

Special Effects for Sport, Concerts and Major Events

London Stadium was built to stage one of the biggest sporting events in the world. More than a decade after the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, it continues to prove how successfully a stadium can evolve.

Today, it is home to West Ham United while remaining a major athletics venue and hosting rugby, football finals and concerts from some of the world’s biggest artists. With proposals now in place to increase the number of concerts and major events held each year, that multi-use role could become even more significant.

Few stadiums have had to reinvent themselves quite like London Stadium. That ability to transform is now part of what defines the venue.

Built to Adapt

London Stadium’s transformation began almost as soon as the Olympic flame went out in 2012.

Originally designed around athletics, the venue was extensively transformed before West Ham United moved there in 2016. Retractable seating allows the lower tiers to move between different configurations, helping the stadium accommodate football alongside the athletics track and other major events.

That adaptability has allowed a wide range of events to take place within the same stadium. Premier League and European football, international athletics, rugby, cup finals and major concerts have all brought their own audiences and productions to Stratford.

Those different uses bring their own production demands.

A different Stadium for every Event

A venue capable of hosting so many different events creates an unusual challenge for live production.

The sightlines, audience configuration and focal point of the stadium depend on what is happening inside it. An athletics meeting built around the track creates a very different environment from a West Ham European night, while a concert transforms the stadium again.

Special effects therefore need to be developed around the way the venue is being used rather than around London Stadium as a fixed space. Positioning, scale and timing all need to work for that particular configuration, with effects planned alongside staging, lighting, sound and broadcast to create one complete production.

Creating a sense of Occasion

Every event brings its own expectations to London Stadium. For West Ham, a European night can bring an entirely different sense of anticipation to the stadium. A rugby showpiece needs to establish its own identity within a venue normally associated with football, while a cup final brings two sets of supporters together for an occasion that exists for one day only.

That individual character is where special effects can have the greatest value. The aim isn’t simply to make every event bigger. It’s to understand what makes that particular occasion important and use the right combination of effects to give its defining moments an identity of their own.

Entertainment Effects at London Stadium

Entertainment Effects has delivered special effects at London Stadium for West Ham United, including European fixtures during the club’s journey towards winning a European trophy, as well as the Saracens Showdown and the Vanarama National League Promotion Final.

Our experience spans multiple sports, audiences and stadium configurations, providing us with first-hand knowledge of the production demands each one brings. Whatever comes next, the starting point remains the same. Understand the event, understand how the stadium is being used and create something that belongs to both.
