Lotus were launching an exciting new fully electric SUV called the Electre.
Raw Productions had been commissioned to create some marketing content including a short promotional video. The creative included the car driving through beautiful mountainous scenery with rivers and lakes. They wanted to recreate this look and feel inside a London studio so designed a set with a huge 14 x 7m high definition LED screen to provide vivid mountain images as the backdrop. They then wanted to position the car in a pool of water in front of the screen so that it would provide a reflection of the mountains behind.
The tank required was a bespoke build due to its size, the same as the screen 14 x 7m, so we had to get pond liner specially made. The client only wanted a very shallow pool so it looked like the car was sitting on top of the water, if it was too deep the tyres would be submerged and it would look like the car was sinking.
This may seem like a fairly simple request, but you’re completely reliant on the floor being perfectly flat. Over a 14m span if the floor is even on a 1 degree incline then the water will be much deeper at end than the other, so you either end up with one of the tank dry or the other too deep. Although floors often look flat to the naked eye they inevitably are not.
The only solution was to build a very low steel deck which could be adjusted and measured to ensure it was as flat as possible. As is often the case when you solve a problem you create another and by raising the pond off the floor it was now difficult to get the vehicle in and out of the water. The decking team build a small ramp to get the car up onto the deck, but with only one access point we had to be very careful moving the car in the water to get the desired angles while not snagging the liner.
